Play at school?

As a teacher, I am always wanting the most out of my day. Many times I ponder ways to get the most out of small groups and centers. I am sure that this is not a foreign thought for any teacher. Some teachers get bent out of shape if he or she hears laughing during group, or center time. Heaven forbid someone have fun. It boils down to control issues driven by state and district expectations. Here is an interesting quote from Dr. Robert Jackson, a retired teacher, principal and Superintendent.
" Play is essential for the emotional-social growth of children. It helps make going to school a pleasure. With opportunities to play, children will have even more chance to be themselves and to grow in creativity and conflict resolution."
I am not saying go ahead and let the kids play instead of doing their job in the center, but don't be afraid of kids having fun while they work. Remember, children's lives are enriched through enjoyment. If you can learn at the same time...utopia!
